Seamless Gutters in Sacramento: What the Price per Foot Buys

Seamless gutters in Sacramento run $11–$19 per foot installed. That's a wide range for something that comes off the same kind of machine on the same driveway, and it's why three quotes on one house in Elk Grove can come back at $2,100, $2,700 and $3,300. The difference isn't the profit margin. It's a handful of choices that don't show up on a one-line quote, and every one of them decides whether the gutters last thirty winters or eight.

The coil

Seamless aluminum gutter is formed from a coil of painted aluminum fed through a machine on the truck. The coil comes in two common thicknesses: .027 inch and .032 inch. The thinner coil is about 15% cheaper and is what most of the low quotes are made from. It dents when a ladder touches it, oil-cans in the summer heat, and sags between hangers under a winter's worth of wet oak leaves. The heavier .032 holds its shape. On a 200-foot house the material difference is roughly $150. Ask which one.

The paint matters too. A baked-on finish carries a manufacturer's warranty against fading and chalking — usually 20 years or more — which is worth having on a south-facing run that gets seven months of Sacramento sun. A bare or cheaply coated coil doesn't. Both look the same on install day.

The hangers

This is the biggest hidden difference. The old way is a spike and ferrule: a long nail driven through the gutter, a sleeve, and into the fascia. Every 1960s ranch house in Arden-Arcade has them, and every one has backed out. The right way is a hidden hanger: a bracket inside the gutter, screwed through the fascia into the rafter tail, every 24 inches — or 18 inches under a heavy tree. Hidden hangers cost about $2–$3 each installed against 50 cents for a spike, so on 200 feet the difference is $200–$300. That's the money that keeps the gutter pitched correctly in year twenty.

On tile roofs the hangers are a different item altogether — long-reach brackets that clear the eave riser and bird stop and let the gutter sit forward of the tile lip. That's a $2–$4 per foot line, and a quote for a tile-roof house that doesn't mention it is a quote for gutters hung at shingle height, which is what's failing on the house now. The downspouts

A 2x3 downspout is standard. A 3x4 is about $15 more per downspout and moves nearly twice the water — but more to the point in Sacramento, it takes a wad of wet London plane leaves without choking. How many downspouts also matters: one per run is the cheap answer; one every 35–40 feet is the right one under trees. Two extra downspouts on a house add $300–$500 to the quote and are the reason the gutter doesn't overflow at 2 a.m. in January when one outlet plugs.

The corners

Every inside and outside corner is a miter — two runs cut at 45 degrees, joined, and sealed. A four-corner ranch is quick. A hip-roof tile home in Roseville's Highland Reserve can have twelve, and each takes twenty minutes and a tube of good sealant. Some quotes price corners; some hide them in the per-foot rate; the cheapest ignore them and rush them. A polyurethane sealant that stays flexible through 105-degree afternoons costs three times what silicone does, and it's the difference between a corner that holds ten years and one that drips in year three.

The fascia

The old gutter comes down and the board behind it is soft at two corners. Now what? A good quote said in advance: "fascia replaced as needed at $10–$24 per foot, checked from the ladder before quoting." A bad quote said nothing, and now you're choosing between a change order and a new gutter hung on rot. Ask whether the fascia was inspected and whether it's on the estimate.

The line-by-line

Add it up and the $2,100 quote and the $3,300 quote are for two different products. One is the gutters you're replacing, made new. The other is a system sized for the roof and hung so it stays put.
